“When I take the fall cereals, for instance, 86 per cent are rated as normal in their development, with spring cereals, we have 71 per cent rated as normal and 65 per cent for oilseeds, 77 per cent for pulse crops, 83 per cent for perennial forages, and 78 per cent for annual forages. These are rated as normal in terms of their development,” he said.

Crop damage over the last week came from the hot and dry weather with some crops receiving minor to moderate damage. There were also reports of wind, grasshoppers and bertha armyworms causing minor crop damage in certain areas.

As for precipitation, it was limited as the Milden area received the most rainfall with 31 millimetres.

Topsoil moisture levels for crop land is 56 per cent adequate and 33 per cent short; hay land moisture is rated 56 per cent adequate and 34 per cent short; and pasture topsoil moisture is 45 per cent adequate and 41 per cent short.

Despite the moisture levels, Osei noted the condition of pastures across the province are in good to fair condition, but some are in poor condition due to the limited rain.

As producers continue to prepare for harvest, Osei reminds them and the public to be careful when operating or driving around large farm equipment.

“There will be increased farm equipment traffic on public roads. Drivers are reminded to have extra patience and caution when encountering large equipment on the road,” he said.
