Some barley producers affected by drop in beer consumption

Jul 28, 2026 | 5:00 PM

Beer consumption across North America has dropped in recent years – how will that affect barley producers?

Beer sales have dropped 11 per cent across the continent since 2019, and according to Beer Canada, 2025 domestic beer sales were down 2.4 per cent compared to 2024, while Canadians drank 8.6 per cent less imported beers during that time.

Beer Canada VP of Federal Affairs Luke Chapman says several factors have led to the decline, including lower consumer disposable income levels, greater consumption of non-beer drinks, and less frequent socialization.

Canada Malting director of grain Ryan Dodd says that pressure is made stronger due to the excellent 2025 barley crop.

Farmers are urged to contract their malting barley to give themselves more flexibility, and they could consider sewing newer malting barley varieties, with more brewers and maltsters considering those new varieties.

There are some positives, with barley generally less exposed to political uncertainties.

The craft beer segment in Alberta has also been growing and increasing its market share, with craft brewers using more malt per litre of brewed beer than the larger companies.
