Agriculture report for Monday, Sept. 14

The latest crop report shows that the provincial harvest is 27 percent complete. Prud’homme area farmer Mark Bilinski says they’re not quite a third done harvest, and they’re looking forward to some sunny weather and late nights.

They had just under six inches of rain during the long weekend, and he says they were lucky to get some barley off before the rain hit.

Balinski says they’re impressed with crop quality so far, and they’re hoping for the best.

Eighty-four per cent of the lentil crop has been combined, followed by 79 per cent of peas, 41 per cent of barley, 38 per cent of durum, spring wheat at 13 per cent, and just 11 per cent of canola.

The Saskatchewan Cattle Association (SCA) has found its new Chief Executive Officer.

Kevin Boon brings more than 40 years of experience in the cattle industry as a rancher, industry leader and executive, most recently serving as General Manager of the BC Cattlemen’s Association (BCCA).

He also held leadership roles with Alberta Beef Producers, the Canadian Cattle Association, the Beef Information Centre and the National Check-off Agency.

SCA Chair Chad Ross said Boon spent his career working for cattle producers.

Boon begins his new role on Nov. 1.

Three nominees have been acclaimed to the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers (SPG) Board of Directors following the close of nominations.

Rob Rigetti of Moose Jaw will join the board in January. BJ Haubrich of Hazenmore and Winston van Staveren of Creelman will continue into their next three-year terms.

Terry Youzwa of Nipawin will leave the board in January, having served two consecutive terms and did not seek re-election.

The Directors’ terms will begin following SPG’s Annual General on January 12.
