MELFORT, Sask. – Cleanfarms will visit six regions in Canada this fall to collect unwanted, old agricultural pesticides and obsolete livestock, equine and poultry medications.

Executive Director Barry Friesen said farmers appreciate the program and wait for it to return to their region every three years so they can dispose of unwanted agricultural materials safely.

“A program to collect old, unwanted pesticides has been in place since 1998. In 2010, we became responsible for it and we know from experience and hearing from farmers that this program is very important to them in managing on-farm waste materials safely,” Friesen said. “The program is designed to help them keep their farms clean and sustainable and to keep these materials out of landfills and the environment.”

The Cleanfarms’ 2022 program will include 81 collection events in British Columbia, Northern Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, and Newfoundland.

The School of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba (UM) has a new director.

Sue Clayton previously served as the executive director of Agriculture in the Classroom – Manitoba (AITC-M).

Prior to AITC-M, Clayton worked in the faculty as its community liaison coordinator where she developed and coordinated student recruitment initiatives, and connected with prospective students, educators, producer, and industry stakeholders to promote FAFS education and research programs.

She also has extensive public education and governance expertise as a school trustee and board chair for the Pembina Trails School Division, and as governing board chair for Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology.

Clayton said she is passionate about agriculture and education.

“I see many opportunities ahead that will build upon the solid foundation of the School, ensuring our new curriculum continues to serve the next generation of farmers and agricultural sector employees,” she said.

Clayton succeeds Michele Rogalsky, who retired as director in June.
