The General Manager of Manitoba Pork is expressing concern over the latest U.S. efforts to restore Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling.

Cam Dahl said M-COOL requires all retail packages of meat in the US to indicate where the animal was born, raised, processed, and packaged, increasing costs due to having to segregate animals.

He said it was also discriminatory against Canadian and Mexican industries, and Dahl says that’s why they won the WTO case.

M-COOL had a significant impact on Canadian pork producers, curtailing their ability to export live animals into the United States.

The origin labelling issue isn’t going away, and Dahl said there should be a solution that satisfies consumers and doesn’t affect the integrated market.

The wet September has some farmers changing how they get crops off the field.

Persistent rain has left wet grain and muddy fields, with harvest already running behind schedule.

Strasbourg-area farmer Glen Munholland said the conditions have pushed him to purchase a used grain dryer.

He said the dryer will help him harvest grain and dry it down to a level where it can be safely stored.

Mother nature hasn’t been kind to producers for the harvest season.

Harvest progress is well back of where it normally is for this time of year.

Agriculture commentator Kevin Hursh said he was surprised that harvest progress was even at 27 per cent province-wide, and he said much of the progress was likely made before the Labour Day long weekend rain.

Hursh said as we get a better idea of what crop quality looks like, we might see a premium on top quality crops, which could be in shorter supply.

Hail damage has been reported in several parts of the province, and Hursh said that’s devastating this time of year with crops closer to maturity.
