Organizers ready for another Crop Production Show

Jan 13, 2020 | 10:30 AM

Crop Production Show in Saskatoon opens at noon today and every square inch of Prairieland Park will be occupied with the usual companies and some new ones as well.

Agriculture Manager Lori Cates said a committee decides what types of new technology they want to feature at the show.

“We meet several times during the year,” she said. “After the applications are in we go through them and if we have any space for new exhibitors then we will prioritize those new applications and the committee will decide based on what’s topical for the year.”

Grain drying has been on the minds of farmers. Cates said there will be new and emerging technology on the subject.

“We have a couple of new companies this year that are promoting or displaying new technology. It’s a cloud based technology. I can’t get into any of the details because I don’t understand it. But we do have some some new companies here,” Cates said. ” I hope everyone comes in and looks into that grain drying, grain handling, grain storage that has become very big this year at the show. There’s several companies doing some new stuff.”

Cates said the four day event gives farmers time to talk to company representatives, ask a lot of questions and get information.

“There’s so much to see and the industry experts are here,” Cates said. “One day just doesn’t do it. We’re told that over and over again it takes more than one day to get through the show and be able to have time to talk to the people you want to talk to. Sometimes there’s lineups at several booths.”

In addition to all the displays, the Bayer Information Theater has wide variety of speakers.

“Again, we try and choose subjects that we think our patrons are going to be interested in. I think we’ve touched on many topics that are in the news,” Cates said. “Mental health is top of mind again with the year that we’ve had. It’s been tough. We’re really looking forward to a full week of great presentations.”

Attendees can pick up a show guide, but the app is also very popular. Cates said most farmers have a phone in their hand so they make use of the information on the app.

As far as changes to the show, Cates said the first one farmers will notice is slightly different hours of operation.

“Today we open at noon until 6:00 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday we’re open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. then Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission price is $17.50,” Cates said. “We also have a new food services area which is something I like to talk about. We have several food areas in the buildings but they’re always busy so we’ve actually opened up a new area. It’ll be noted on signage around the buildings but hopefully will take some pressure off at lunchtime and everyone will have a place to sit and eat.”

Cates said everyone appreciates the free parking.

“You may have to walk a little bit if you’re at the far end, but the fact that you don’t have to go searching for parking is such a big deal,” Cates said. “We had a little bit of snow so the guys will be working to make sure the parking lot stays clear. We have the complimentary shuttle and it runs all day starting at 9:30 in the morning till five o’clock at night.”
