Farming roots guide New Era Ag’s approach in Melfort

Oct 21, 2026 | 6:00 AM

For the team at New Era Ag Technologies in Melfort, agriculture is both a profession and a connection to home.

Co-founder and general manager Ashley Heavin grew up on her family’s grain farm in Melfort before pursuing agronomy and a career in agricultural retail. Fellow co-founder and agronomist Mark Gordon also grew up in the community, building a career advising producers while continuing to operate his own farm.

Those backgrounds help shape a business focused on providing farmers across northeast Saskatchewan with practical advice, crop inputs and support for the decisions they make throughout the growing season.

New Era opened its Melfort location in 2023, bringing together local agricultural experience and the resources of its established Swan River, Man., operation. The company’s mission centres on offering ideas, solutions, advice and supplies to customers in an agricultural industry that continues to change.

At the Melfort location, that work ranges from supplying seed treatments and crop protection products to delivering dry and liquid fertilizer directly to farms. Its agronomic services include crop scouting, seed germination and vigour testing, tissue testing and soil testing.

Together, those services help producers assess conditions in their fields and make informed choices about their crops. Products are one part of the equation; the knowledge to help farmers decide where and how to use them is another.

The people providing that support bring experience from across the industry. The Melfort team’s backgrounds include agricultural retail, grain processing and procurement, seed and grain technology, and hands-on work on family farms.

Gordon’s agronomy coaching experience, for example, has focused on helping clients build their farms’ profit potential. Heavin brings experience in grain elevators, chemical warehouse management and agricultural sales.

Research is also part of the wider New Era business. Established in 2015, its research division generates local data on seed varieties and crop inputs, while providing agricultural companies with opportunities to develop, test and demonstrate products.

That combination of farming experience, technical knowledge and customer service provides the foundation for New Era’s next step in Melfort: adding an experienced agricultural professional to its team as an Agronomy & Sales Lead.

The position carries substantial responsibility for a territory and its customer relationships, with significant autonomy in developing those relationships and helping grow the business.

New Era is seeking someone who already understands agriculture, farmers and the industry. It is an experienced role, requiring agricultural or agronomic knowledge and the initiative to put that experience to work.

For someone considering a move beyond a traditional corporate environment, the appeal is the opportunity to contribute more directly to a growing agricultural business. The successful candidate will have room to take ownership of their work and a meaningful role in the company’s success.

The opportunity builds on the same focus that brought New Era to Melfort: connecting experienced agricultural people with farmers who need dependable products, informed advice and practical solutions.
