Harvest progress stalls after significant September rains

The latest crop report shows what we already knew – the widespread rain in the province brought harvest progress to a trickle.

Just 32 per cent of the crop is in the bin, an increase of five per cent from the week prior. That’s well behind the five-year average of 71 per cent, and the 10-year average of 63 per cent.

The numbers in local regions are even less advanced.

Just nine per cent of harvest is complete across all regions of the northeast. In the east-central region, an average of 18 per cent of the crop has been harvested, with the Foam Lake, Wadena, and LeRoy division reporting just 10 per cent in the bin.

With the rain, the moisture levels increased across the board. 34 per cent of cropland topsoil moisture, 21 per cent of hayland topsoil moisture, and 13 per cent of pasture topsoil moisture is rated as surplus across the province. However, in the northeast, those numbers are 59, 52, and 47, and in the east-central areas, it’s 40, 30, and 29.

Meanwhile, 98 per cent of fall rye and 93 per cent of winter wheat have been harvested. Mustard is at 51, Flax at 9, soybeans at 7, and canola at 15 per cent. 88 per cent of lentils, 84 per cent of field peas, and 26 per cent of chickpeas are in the bin. Barley is at 47 per cent, durum at 46, spring wheat at 17, oats at 19, canary seed at 18, and triticale at 89 per cent.

Crop damage was mostly due to excessive moisture and strong wind, with some frost damage reported. Not surprisingly, warm, dry weather is needed across the board to get harvest back in full swing again.
