Roughly four per cent of Manitoba’s harvest has been completed

The latest crop report noted scattered rain reached parts of the province with the majority reporting accumulations less than 5 millimeters. The Northwest, Eastern, and parts of the Interlake saw larger amounts near the end of the week. The heaviest was reported in Minitonas with 30 mm.

Applied Research and Production Specialist James Frey said some farmers have started dessicating.

“That’s often just to get a good uniform dry down across the field ahead of harvest. We might see some late thistles or even some grassy weeds that have sprung up after the rain,” Frey said. “It just kind of gives a good even harvestability for the whole field.”

Cattle producers are still very busy, heading into the fall. He said there is still some late hay that is getting cut as the weather allows. Frey said it’s slightly more challenging with the cooler nights and heavier dew in the morning.

“Good luck there with everybody who is still going at that. Corn silage has begun in some areas as well, and that’s apparently looking like it’s quite good yields as well,” he said. “In general I think the rains have really helped to bring pasture along and we also see that there’s some manure clean out and spreading going on in fields. Even if you have nothing to do with agriculture you might notice that because it often gives quite a pungent smell as you’re driving by.”

Frey added the livestock themselves are in good condition, but there have been some cases of foot rot and pinkeye. He said some auction marts are reopening for the first of the upcoming fall sales.

The accumulated growing degree days (GDD) for the period of May 1 to Aug. 23 ranged between 1104 and 1533 GDD so far this season. Most of southern Manitoba has accumulated more than 1300 GDD.
