Agriculture Roundup for Thursday August 5, 2021

MELFORT, Sask. — Several livestock producers have been the victims of fraud while attempting to purchase hay.

According to a joint statement by Saskatchewan RCMP and Livestock Services of Saskatchewan, the scammers place ads on social media or buy/sell platforms asking for payment in advance. With hay in very short supply, some people sent the funds and found out later that there was no hay.

RCMP advises not to send any money until the hay is confirmed and delivery has been established.

The federal and provincial governments are answering calls for help.

They have agreed to increase the 2021 AgriStability interim benefit payment percentage from 50 per cent to 75 per cent for Saskatchewan producers.

The interim benefit provides the opportunity for producers who are enrolled in AgriStability to access a portion of their benefit early, to help support losses and cover costs.
