Farmers in B-C are preparing for an influx of avian flu cases as wild birds begin migrating south.

But a spokesperson for the B-C Poultry Association Emergency Operations Centre said he doesn’t expect as much devastation as last year.

Ray Nickel said farmers are using the lessons they learned since the highly infectious H-5-N-1 strain began spreading in late 2021 to better prepare for potential outbreaks.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said it believes migratory birds are responsible for the outbreaks.

It’s World Egg Day, a celebration featuring the high-quality protein and vital nutrients found in eggs, as well as the work of egg farmers around the world.

Canadian egg farmers, committed to sustainable farming practices, have decreased their environmental footprint by 50 per cent while doubling production over 50 years.

Canadians can test their knowledge of eggs and egg farming with an online trivia game. Earthwise Egg Quest: Canadian Egg Farming Trivia Challenge will teach about how sustainability starts with Canadian eggs.

Starting Monday, BC Agriculture Minister Pam Alexis leads a three-day trade mission to the United States. Even though she’s not going far, she hopes the trip will have major benefits for B-C’s food and beverage sector.

A release from the Ministry of Agriculture said Alexis will travel to Seattle and surrounding areas to strengthen B.C.’s knowledge and expertise about exporting to the Pacific Northwest.

Alexis said the province is determined to support businesses that are ready to export their products internationally.

Representatives from 11 B-C companies will join Alexis on the trip and the ministry said all the participants represent export-ready businesses with sales stock in a minimum of 75 stores in Canada.
