MELFORT, Sask. – A rail strike in the United States was averted, much to the relief of the agriculture sector.

Agricultural Retailers Association president Daren Coppock said a strike would have gridlocked commodity supply chains during harvest.

He said farm retailers were already feeling the impact of a potential strike as railroads started to cancel shipments of fertilizer products such as anhydrous ammonia and affecting domestic fertilizer production earlier last week.

A labour deal was brokered by Labour Secretary Marty Walsh who tweeted a deal was reached after roughly 20 hours of talks.

Specific details on the agreement were not released. The talks involved 12 unions representing more than 100,000 engineers, conductors, mechanics, and other railroad workers.

The Toronto Maple Leafs will take to the ice this season wearing a patch reading “Milk” on their sweaters.

The NHL team announced a sponsorship deal with the Dairy Farmers of Ontario (DFO), which sees the club wear the logo on the upper right corner of their home blue, road white, and alternate black jerseys.

The club said this is a multi-year partnership to support healthy active living.

DFO said as part of this deal they will donate 5,000 Maple Leafs tickets to community youth groups.

Grocery prices were up 10.8 per cent in August compared with a year ago, but last month’s inflation rate still slowed.

Statistics Canada says inflation was seven per cent last month, marking the second consecutive month inflation has slowed on an annual basis.

It’s largely due to cheaper prices at the pump.
