Improving access to fruits and vegetables in a short season climate

Oct 30, 2026 | 3:26 PM

Canada’s short growing season limits the ability to produce enough fruits and vegetables to meet the country’s year-round demand.

To look closer at that challenge, the federal government will fund a new program to examine alternatives.

The Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) Growth Pathway Program will support increased domestic fruit and vegetable production and reduce reliance on imported produce.

CEA Technology Adoption Stream will support the adoption, expansion and modernization of CEA infrastructure and technologies, including automation, robotics, lighting, and digital growing tools.

Expanding Local Food Production in Rural and Northern Communities Stream will support community-driven ideas that increase local and regional food production, improve access to fresh food, and strengthen food security in rural and northern communities.

Approved projects may receive between $100,000 and $10 million in funding from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

The federal government is committing $750 million to the initiative.
