Ag Roundup for Friday, Feb. 6

Feb 6, 2026 | 12:18 PM

The RM of Garden River, northeast of Prince Albert, is taking steps to control the beaver population by blowing up dams.

Reeve Ryan Scragg said a contractor was hired to dynamite a series of beaver dams on the Garden River and some other waterways within the RM.

He said the issue hasn’t been dealt with in recent years and that’s led to infrastructure damage, especially on bridges.

Scragg added the biggest risk is during spring run off when ice also builds up.

Repairs for a single runoff event can cost between $50,000 and $100,000

Producers have a chance to learn more about a variety of topics at Crop Talk 2026.

The free event is being held in the Ches Leach Lounge of the Art Hauser Centre in Prince Albert on Feb.11. Discussions will centre on local ag research at the Conservation Learning Centre, pests, weed management, programs for producers, and more.

Among the guest speakers is World Weather’s Drew Lerner, who will take a deep dive into the weather outlook for 2026. You can call 306-960-1834 to register.

Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck spoke with young agricultural producers on Thursday at the Sask Young Ag’s Proudly Ag Conference at the Western Development Museum.

Beck told the young producers that they are carrying on a proud tradition for their family, community, and the province.

The Saskatchewan NDP launched YourFutureYourSay.ca this week.

Beck will tour the province and speak with young adults at events that are organized for them to share their ideas and priorities.

Visitors to YourFutureYourSay.ca can also share their ideas through an online form.

The NDP said the project will culminate with the release of policy proposals designed and focused on keeping young people in the province.
