Food inflation rises, including beef

Jul 30, 2025 | 12:22 PM

An analysis from financial comparison platform Dollarwise says Saskatchewan has seen the fourth-highest food inflation in the country.

Prices are up 3.5 per cent over the past year in the province, topped only by New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Ontario.

Dollarwise analyzed data from StatsCan’s Consumer Price Index from May of 2025, with Canada’s average at 3.4 per cent.

One of the largest jumps was in the price of beef.

Dollarwise CEO Jack Prenter says some places are paying nearly 25 per cent more than they did last year.

Fresh or frozen beef led nationwide increases at 12.7 per cent, including a jump of more than $2 a kilogram for ground beef.

That was a 16.7 per cent increase.

Other increases included oranges at 15.8 per cent, potatoes at 9.6 per cent.

“Not all food categories face the same increases,” Prenter adds. “Families should look at shifting their shopping habits toward items with more stable prices to better manage their food budgets.”
