Farmers from around the globe attend Ag in Motion

More than 30,000 people are expected to fill up Discovery Farm for the 2024 Ag in Motion Expo in Saskatoon, many from thousands of kilometres away.

It appears to be a very Canadian event, but the expo grounds are also filled with visitors from all over the globe hoping to learn more from some of Canada’s best farmers.

Terefe, a delegate from the Embassy of Ethiopia for Canada, said Ethiopia is looking to learn how to grow the scale of its farms.

“Ethiopia has a population of more than 126 million peoples. So, we have our population at five per cent participating in farming. They are farmers.”

Terefe said he hopes to help get more information about farming technology to his country and its investors so they can create better farms to feed the large Ethiopian population.

“We need commercial farming, and we need technology (like) this to feed all these people. We need technology that especially enhances production yields and crops.”

Terefe said Saskatoon is a beautiful city with better agricultural technology than he’s ever seen.

Abraham Bushell, a fifth-generation Australian farmer and farm manager from New South Wales, said Canadian crops are similar to those in Australia and he wants to see how farms work in the prairies.

“Canada grows a lot of canola and wheat, pretty similar to Australia, so we wanted to see what it’s all about,” said Bushell.

This was Bushell’s first trip to Canada. Bushell said, so far, Saskatchewan has been very similar to his hometown, just six hours west of Sydney.

When asked about the current heat wave, both Terefe and Bushell agreed the 30 plus temperatures were quite comfortable.

“It is good for me. (In) Ethiopia there is all types of weather,” said Terefe.

“This is very comfortable. We get a lot hotter than this at home,” said Bushell.
