Crop Report

Over 80 per cent of crops harvested across Saskatchewan

Sep 21, 2023 | 11:26 AM

Harvest is getting close to wrapping up in Saskatchewan.

According to the province’s weekly crop report, 82 per cent of crops are now out of the ground with half of the districts being at least 90 per cent complete. This is far ahead of the five-year average, 64 per cent, and the 10-year average, 62 per cent.

Farmers in the southwest are essentially done as they’ve harvested 97 per cent of all crops. The only crops remaining are some acres of flax.

Those northwest of North Battleford and around Yorkton are the farthest behind as just over half of the crops have been harvested.

Around 75 per cent of crops around Prince Albert and across the northeast have been harvested.

Winter wheat, fall rye, canary seed, and peas are all done, while flax and soybeans are the only crops under 50 per cent. Spring wheat, durum, barley, mustard, lentils, and chickpeas are all close to being entirely harvested.

As for crop damage, drought conditions and grasshoppers were the biggest issues farmers faced this past week. Light frosts, wind, and wildlife also caused some problems.

Meanwhile, Saskatchewan is the farthest along in its harvest among the three prairie provinces.

Manitoba is 64 per cent complete, as of September 19, while Alberta has collected roughly 44 per cent of their primary crops, as of September 12.
