The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in southern Alberta.

Avian flu was found in a commercial poultry operation in Warner County southeast of Lethbridge.

CFIA said additional primary control zones will be created as needed.

Canadian Western Agribition (CWA) is expanding into animal agriculture technology with the launch of the first annual Canadian Animal AgTech Awards.

CWA CEO Shaun Kindopp said the program will give businesses an opportunity to be recognized at a national level as well as receive exclusive access to key stakeholders and events being held at CWA this November.

“The Canadian Animal AgTech Awards solidify Canadian Western Agribition as a leader in the agriculture industry,” Kindopp said. “We are thrilled to be working with an internationally recognized organization in Deloitte as we continue to find ways to expand the CWA brand and maximize the value we offer our stakeholders and community”

The three award categories include Most Innovative, Business of the Year, and Rising Star in Animal Ag Tech.

Applications will be accepted until Oct. 6.

The Canadian Centre for Food Integrity (CCFI) is looking for a new chief executive officer.

John Jamieson is leaving the position after serving CCFI in various capacities for 25 years.

He played a pivotal role in the successful launches of ‘It’s Good Canada’ and ‘Agriculture More than Ever,’ while also spearheading the efforts behind Canada’s Agriculture Day.

Under his leadership, CCFI also experienced substantial membership growth.

Jamieson leaves at the end of the month.
