MELFORT, Sask. – New amendments to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations have now taken effect.

The 13 changes include measures to strengthen the laws around temporary foreign workers (TFW).

Employers must provide TFWs with information about their rights in Canada, prohibit employers from charging workers recruitment fees, and ensure there are no actions against workers who come forward with complaints.

Employers using the TFW Program are also required to provide private health insurance when needed.

Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion Minister Carla Qualtrough said everyone deserves to work in dignity, in safety, and in health.

“With these changes, our government is strengthening protections for temporary foreign workers,” she said. “These individuals come to Canada and work for Canadian businesses, and help drive the Canadian economy forward. We have a responsibility to ensure they are protected and respected.”

Qualtrough said the new regulations will ensure greater transparency and clarity on the requirements and conditions of the TFW Program and will lead to better protection of workers and increased program compliance.

Canada’s agriculture minister is into the second day two of a two-day trade mission to Manila, Philippines.

Marie-Claude Bibeau is meeting with the Philippine undersecretary of agriculture, members of the farm advisory council, representatives of meat processors and meat importers. She will also meet with flour and feed milling groups.

Yesterday, she met with senior representatives of Tim Hortons Philippines to discuss future plans of the Canadian firm in Asia.

She also toured a milling company that uses Canadian wheat.
