Wheat Growers speak out against potential changes to pesticide act

Changes in how the federal government may review pesticides aren’t sitting well with the Western Canadian Wheat Growers.

The group recently announced they made a submission to the Pest Management Regulatory Agency’s review of the Pest Control Products Act.

This comes after the government stated last August they were potentially changing the way pesticides are reviewed, while also putting a pause on proposed increases to maximum residue limits.

“We would support PMRA Program renewal with more transparent decision-making, more predictable risk assessment, and the ability to bring in data earlier rather than modelling worst-case scenarios,” said Jim Wickett, WCWG’s Secretary-Treasurer.

“Science-based decisions must be the final recommendations, and not interfered with by politicians or bureaucrats.”

The Wheat Growers claim the current regulatory system is one of the most robust science-based systems in the world and the federal government is playing politics with it.

The Pest Control Products Act has been in place since 2002.
