Saskatoon 4-H event adjusts to COVID-19

MELFORT, Sask. — Prairieland Junior Ag Showcase is a chance for 4-H members from northwest Saskatchewan to show off a year’s worth of hard work.

4-H members will be able to exhibit their animals in the show ring at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon June 28 and 29 and July 2 to 5.

Prairieland Park assistant agriculture manager Leigh Ann Hurlburt said competitors will need to meet current COVID-19 guidelines.

“We’re allowing them to have a parent and club leader. There are no spectators other than for the steer sale where we’ll have our buyers there,” Hurlburt said. “We will have a live stream so that grandma and grandpa and brothers and sisters can watch from home.”

There will be separate days for each event. The light horse events will be held on June 28 and 29 followed by the sheep and cattle events.

Hurlburt said it is easier to have the animals come in for the day and then go home.

“We have to social distance so it was too difficult to have all of the animals there at the same time and all the species there at the same time, which we love to do, but this year we can’t,” she said.

The sheep showcase will be July 2. The female beef show will be July 3 while the steer show and sale will be on July 5.

There will be 43 steers in the show this year. Hurlburt said those numbers are lower as a few clubs decided to hold their own events. There were also fewer 4-H members with project animals this year.

The show marks the end of their year and is a highlight for members. Even with the restrictions, Hurlburt said it will still be a good time.

“We want to make sure we have something there for them. It won’t be the same but at least they’ll be able to come out,” she said.
