Alberta announces 20 per cent off crop insurance premiums for 2021

Jan 26, 2021 | 5:16 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – This is not an ad for crop insurance. This is a move by the Government of Alberta and the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) that is expected to save farmers more than $55-million.

Agriculture and Forestry Minister Devin Dreeshen announced Monday that farmers in Alberta will receive a 20 per cent reduction in crop insurance premiums this year.

He says this move will increase the competitiveness of Alberta farmers internationally while helping to support job creation.

“A farm with 2,000 insured acres will save about $8,000 this year alone. This puts money back into the pockets of Alberta farmers right away. Agriculture continues to be an economic bright light and Alberta’s government is strengthening the sector even more.”

Dreeshen adds that the reduction in premiums will also help to counterbalance the increase in the federal carbon tax.

“I’m thrilled that we can pass these savings on to our clients and proud that our healthy crop insurance program in Alberta can give producers a bit of a break when they need it most,” says AFSC CEO Darryl Kay.

Approximately 72 per cent of farmers in the province are enrolled in the crop insurance program.
