Agriculture Roundup up for Thursday March 26, 2020

Mar 26, 2020 | 9:21 AM

Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) is reaching out to farmers to identify any issues being caused by the COVID-19 outbreak.

A survey will be posted on the CFA website each Monday and farmers will have until Thursday morning to complete it.

The survey questions will change weekly as new issues and priorities emerge.

The results will be submitted to provincial representatives as well as the CFA executive each Friday morning.

The responses to this survey will be used in consultation with the federal government to discuss farmers concerns.

There has been an improvement in grain movement.

Western Grain Elevator Association executive director Wade Sobkowich said since the blockades ended grain has been moving as fast as capacity has been provided by the railways.

He said grain movements in March have been high and vessels have been moving through the Ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert.

Sobkowich said the other good news is penalties and demurrage costs at port have been decreasing as well.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is prioritizing its food safety in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

CFIA activated its business continuity plan, which introduces a temporary suspension of low-risk activities. It allows CFIA to continue to safeguard the health and safety of its staff while refocusing efforts in areas of higher risk and towards activities that are critical to the safety of food, as well as animal and plant health.

The full list of priorities can be found on their website.
