U of S to “operate as usual,” considers remote classes

The University of Saskatchewan (U of S) issued a statement Wednesday afternoon on the “quickly evolving COVID-19” situation.

In a release by University Communications, the U of S says they’re focused on ensuring health and safety in their community, but are looking to minimize disruptions for students and staff.

The U of S said due to the province not having a laboratory-confirmed case of COVID-19, the university will be operating as usual. If that changes, they will operate under the advice of the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Saskatchewan Health Authority.

They are looking into other options for students, should things change before the university year wraps up.

“We are currently considering remote and online learning methods and other teaching strategies that do not require in-person classrooms, and looking at alternative options for exams should we need them. We are also looking at options that enable our employees to work from home if necessary,” the Wednesday release reads.

The U of S also implemented a number of decisions related to travel.

As of Tuesday, student travel for University related activities has been cancelled to China, Hong Kong, Japan, Italy, South Korea and Iran.

Wednesday, changes were set in place for request to travel processes for all faculty and staff.

The U of S also outlined recommended precautions to prevent illness and transmission:

• Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
• Sneeze into your sleeve or elbow and throw away soiled tissues as soon as possible, followed by hand washing
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
• Stay home if you are sick
• Make sure that your vaccinations are up-to-date
• Avoid contact with people who are sick
