Agriculture Roundup for Friday November 29, 2019

Canadian Western Agribition (CWA) held another successful bison show and sale.

There were 45 animals in the ring with an average price of just over $4,000 per head.

Saskatchewan Bison Association President Les Kroeger said even with entries down a bit this year, because of weather and the late harvest, there were a lot of positives.

“Similar to other industries in agriculture, especially in the livestock sector, we’ve in just a little bit of a pricing correction. Prices are down just a little bit, not a whole lot. We’re still doing very good,” he said.

Another busy day at CWA in the Chevrolet GMC Arena.

On the agenda is the Shorthorn, Hereford, Charolais and the Prospect Steer and Heifer shows.

The John Deere Sales Arena will be busy with the Commercial Cattle show and the Power and Perfection Angus sale.

The Purebred Sheep shows, sheep shearing and hoof trimming demonstration takes place in the Canada Centre Arena.

The Agribition Select Horse sale and demonstration will be in the Brandt Centre.

The Maple Leaf Finals Rodeo starts at 7 p.m.

The show concludes tomorrow.

While the CN Rail strike ended on Tuesday a farm group said it would like to see the federal government involved in the future.

Western Grain Elevator Association (WGEA) executive director Wade Sobkowich said the federal government should deem rail movement to be an essential similar to Canada Post, healthcare and emergency services.

He said rail service is vital to the Canadian economy and a work stoppage can bring the country to its knees.

Sobkowich said the eight day CN Rail strike is going to have a significant impact on grain movement in the weeks and months ahead.
