Crop Report

Millions of acres unharvested

Nov 7, 2019 | 4:04 PM

It’s estimated three-and-a-half million acres of crop is still in the field.

Every region has crop in the field, but the largest percentage is in east-central and southeast.

The Ministry of Agriculture will not release another crop report until Nov. 21 but the last official number was 90 per cent combined. Extension specialist Cory Jacob believes that number may have edged up to 91 per cent.

“I know there’s producers out there trying to combine. They’re doing a few acres here and a few acres there,” he said. “I think we’ve made a little progress but more than what we had the previous week because I know there are people still trying to chip away at it.”

Jacobs said what’s being combined now is taking a lot of time and effort.

“Anything that’s in a swath, I really don’t think producers are going to be able to get at it. There are some producers trying to turn swaths or invert them to get the snow off, but it’s not working,” Jacob said. “With standing crop there is a bit of a better chance they’re going to be able to harvest, but there are a lot of difficulties with that as well.”

Jacobs said he’s skeptical what’s left in the field will make it to the bin.

“With that much crop left out, I can’t see it. I’m hoping to see more progress if the weather turns around but I can’t see us finishing at this time.”
