The west-central Saskatchewan community of Rosetown is grappling with a major loss.

Late Saturday night, the town’s Co-op Agro Centre burned to the ground.

General manager Mike Moon says crews were able to spare the fertilizer bins, and fortunately no one was hurt.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

Farm Credit Canada (FCC) is giving $1.5 million to 94 community groups across Canada to support rural capital projects.

FCC AgriSpirit Fund awarded between $5,000 and $25,000 for community improvement projects that enhance the lives of residents or contribute to sustainability in communities.

Saskatchewan received $194,000 for several projects.

The Foam Lake Community Theatre was given $10,000 to re-insulate the roof and the Mistatim Community Centre received $10,000 to repaint water damaged walls, and upgrade the plumbing and electrical.

The Nokomis Recreation Centre Facility Board will use the $5,000 contribution to apply cork to the main beams as insulation over the skating rink while the Village of Albertville will replace windows and upgrade the exterior of the community centre building with styrofoam and house wrap with the $5,000 they received.

The executive director of the Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance said the lack of a deep debate about trade during the federal election campaign was particularly troubling at an uncertain time of international trade tensions and threats of expanding protectionism.

With 10 days remaining in the 40-day election campaign, the alliance took an unusual step of sending an open letter to party leaders to express its disappointment that there had been no serious discussion about how to ensure Canada’s long term economic success by growing exports.

A spokesperson for Finance Minister Bill Morneau said that after the new cabinet is sworn in on Nov. 20, the Liberal government will look at measures to grow the economy, increase productivity and add to the investments it made during its first mandate.
