Despite some rain last week many areas of Saskatchewan are still in desperate need of moisture.

The latest provincial crop report said the rain that did fall will encourage germination and growth on cropland, hay land and pasture.

But the amount of rain varied significantly, with many small, localized showers rather than wide-ranging precipitation.

Crop conditions across the province range from poor to good.

The 2019 Saskatchewan Outstanding Young Farmers have been announced.

Jenna and Jason Ranger farm in the Leask and Shellbrook areas.

Jaran Farms is an 11,000 acre operation growing canola, oats, wheat, lentils and peas.

Canada’s Farm Progress Show in Regina is celebrating the end of a dry spell.

There will be free gate admission between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. today.

The last day of the show features a presentation on growing hemp, the Empowering Women in Ag Conference at the Mosaic AGT Lounge from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and a safety presentation with Eldeen Pozniak. The show closes at 4:00 p.m.

New tools are being developed to identify risks to agriculture production.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) along with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) have created a new suite of short-term weekly forecasts to help producers prepare for extreme weather conditions.

Patrick Cherneski with AAFC said developing new tools that help identify the risks to Canadian agricultural production is increasingly important.

The forecasts are now available on line.

Manitoba Pork said the number of cases of an infectious virus fatal to piglets has increased significantly in recent weeks.

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus has been found in 40 hog operations.

Producers and stakeholders are being advised to consult herd veterinarians and visit Manitoba Pork’s biosecurity webpage.
