Crop report

Slow start to seeding

May 9, 2019 | 11:28 AM

The cool weather didn’t stop some farmers from starting their seeding operations.

The Ministry of Agriculture’s weekly report shows 13 per cent of the crop is in.

The southeastern region made the most progress where 23 per cent of the crop is in the ground. The northwest and southwest regions are 14 per cent seeded while the west central region is at nine per cent. The east central district is reporting seven per cent seeded while only three per cent of the crop is in the ground in the northeast.

Topsoil moisture conditions are excellent in the northeast, rated at 81 per cent adequate.

Rainfall this past week ranged from trace amounts to 18 millimeters in the Bruno area. The Arborfield and Nipawin areas reported 15 millimeters, Lake Lenore received nine millimeters and the Prince Albert area 10 millimeters. The Hudson Bay received the most precipitation since April 1 at 35 millimeters.

Pasture and hay land growth has been slow but is expected to improve with the recent moisture and warm weather in the forecast.
