New oat processing facility in Saskatchewan

Oat processing plant for central Saskatchewan

MELFORT, Sask. – A new oat processing facility is being set up in Saskatchewan’s most productive oat growing region.

AGT Food and Ingredients Inc. will start commissioning a value-added oat milling plant near Aberdeen where the company has an existing facility that was used primarily for pulse crops.

AGT President and CEO Murad Al-Katib said the plant will focus on the production of oat groats, flours and other milled oat products, for plant-based human food, specialty ingredient and animal feed products.

He said the facility continues AGT’s focus of plant-based ingredients and value-added products.

“We are very excited about this new venture for AGT. Oats are very complementary to pulses in their amino acid profile, which increases their digestibility and gives them highly desirable characteristics for extruded products like snacks and pasta, bakery applications and the beverage industry,” Al-Katib said.

AGT exports thousands of tonnes of oats each year and combined with its experience with value-added milling the company has an advantage in creating value for producers, according to Al-Katib.

“With a number of new products being offered in our system utilizing oats, including extruded flours and blends, snacks and pastas with oats and pulses, we expect that our existing and new customers will find our unique oat-derived products to provide significant advantages for their products as well,” Al-Katib said.

Construction will begin immediately on the expansion of the Aberdeen plant with the milling facility accepting oats from farmers this fall.
