Year in Review: 4-H success story

Dec 25, 2019 | 12:00 PM

It’s time for some good news.

A local 4-Her had an exceptional year with achievements at the local and national level.

Justin Harcourt with the Tisdale 4-H Beef club took home two major prizes at the Melfort Regional 4-H Beef show and sale in July.

Harcourt had the grand champion steer and reserve champion female. The steer sold for $4.50 per pound on the last day of the show.

Fast forward to Agribition in November where Harcourt had another successful showing at the Canadian National 4-H and Youth Judging competition.

Harcourt said he had to earn a spot on the 4-H Saskatchewan team.

“You have to qualify through the regional and provincial levels in order to be a part of the team,” Harcourt told farmnewsNOW. “Once you get to the national level, there’s 45 kids there. You judge 12 classes, eight of which you give oral reasons. You have two hours to deliver the eight oral reasons. Everything is scored out of 50.”

Harcourt said it was a thrill to participate and an accomplishment for someone his age.

“It was a really exciting moment. You’re sitting in the back of the room that’s leading up for how you placed and for a kid my age at the minimum age requirement of 17, it was really exciting to hear my name called,” he said.

Harcourt received a $1,250 scholarship and belt buckle for his efforts. He said he enjoys working with livestock and is planning a career in agriculture.

“The cattle industry is something that I’ve always looked up to growing up on purebred Charolais farm. The industry is on the rise right now. It’s just really exciting time to be a part of the beef operation,” he said. “I was accepted at the U of S for the ag business program and then maybe I’ll look into the marketing field. I’ll see where life takes me.”

The team award went to the 4-H Saskatchewan team.
