Pork and Beef Exports

Canadian pork products back in China soon

Nov 5, 2019 | 2:44 PM

The issues preventing the export of pork products to China have been resolved. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement on social media today.

Sask Pork General Manager Mark Ferguson said the loss of the market was significant and the resumption of trade is good news for the industry. He’s now waiting for details.

“The market is an important one. It’s our third largest export market so not being able to send products there has been a huge issue for our processors,” Ferguson said. “We’re looking forward to receiving more information from the federal government on this and I think our exporters are wondering exactly when they’ll be able to start shipping.”

Canadian Pork Council (CPC) Chair Rick Bergmann said this important market has been closed since exports were suspended in June.

“We are very appreciative of the efforts of government officials to help restore reliable access to China,” Bergmann said. “We’d like to thank Agriculture and Agri-food Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau and International Trade Diversification Minister Jim Carr for the leadership they have shown in working to resolve this issue. We look forward to working with Ambassador Barton to further strengthen Canadian-Chinese relations.”

CPC First Vice-Chair Hans Kristensen will travel to China next week with representatives from Canada’s red meat industry including Canada Pork International and the Canadian Meat Council.

Chinese pork supplies have been reduced by an outbreak of African swine fever.
