Mexico Trade Mission

Mexico trade mission features canola, wheat and cattle

Oct 4, 2019 | 5:00 PM

Saskatchewan Agriculture David Marit will lead a trade mission to Mexico highlighting Saskatchewan’s canola, wheat and cattle sectors.

Marit said Mexico is Saskatchewan’s fourth largest trading partner. The delegation will also include representatives from Canadian Western Agribition and the Canola Council of Canada.

“Just under $750 million worth of exports to Mexico in 2018. I think there’s opportunity for growth. Obviously a large part of that is the canola side of it but they also do non-durum wheat, they do oats. Another big one that’s growing is the livestock side with beef and embryos,” Marit said.

“It’s a big industry for us. We’re going down to help build those relationships, maintain them and grow them if we can and really show the people and the industry players in Mexico not only what we do here, but how we do it in a sustainable manner.”

Canada exported nearly $2 billion worth of agri-food exports to the country in 2018. Saskatchewan is Canada’s leading agri-food exporter to Mexico accounting for almost 40 per cent of exports.

“Mexico is one of our largest trading partners, it makes sense to do business with a market so easily accessible and free of duties and tariffs,” Marit said. “The mission will create many opportunities to strengthen our trade, research and investment ties with some of Saskatchewan’s long standing Mexican partners, companies and industry organizations.”

The mission will also promote research, investment and other collaborative opportunities in Saskatchewan’s value-added sector.

The delegation leaves for the six-day trade mission on Oct. 6.
