Cattlemen District Meetings

Livestock producers to discuss taxes and succession

Oct 2, 2019 | 5:20 PM

The Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association (SCA) hold fall meetings this month.

SCA Chief Executive Officer Ryder Lee said there are a total of 11 meetings which start on Oct. 22 in Meadow Lake and Shellbrook and work their way south.

“New this year, we’re going to have MNP start the evening off at 5 p.m. talking about farm structure and planning,” Lee said. “They’ll be talking about things like tax tips and how to best plan for succession. So I think there will be some things that are good for just about everybody’s operation. If you’re a multi-generation place make sure you bring both.”

Lee said this year there will be a national update from the people working on beef producers behalf in Ottawa and Calgary. There will also be something for the new producer.

“We’re also going to add this year young producers’ forums so make sure if you’re getting started in the industry or got plans to be in it for a long, long time, come out and let us know from your point of view what you think needs to be done,” Lee said. “Load up a truck, bring a neighbour that’s never been to a meeting.”

Lee said there will be representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, crop insurance, watershed and Verified Beef Production Plus.

“If you’ve got any questions about any industry program from the government or industry side, there will probably be somebody there that can help you out,” Lee added. “SCA will give the update, our budget and the year that went on and things that have been coming and going. We’re looking to hear from producers on what we should be focusing on and what the board needs to deliberate on and take action.”

Doors will open at 4:30 p.m., with the meeting starting at 5 p.m. The free supper is at 6 and the SCA’s sessions at 7 p.m.

“I hope everything goes smoothly with the weather between now and then so you can take that time,” Lee said.
