Mental health training among producers open for applications

Sep 26, 2019 | 12:00 PM

Applications are open for the Do More Ag and Farm Credit Canada rural mental health training program.

The program offers training and workshops to community members on how to identify mental health concerns among producers.

Executive Director Adelle Stewart said it is important to bring this training to rural areas.

“Improve mental health literacy so we can create a network and community of people that can support each other when professional access can be quite limited,” Stewart said.

Trainees will receive similar to physical first aid, which is a mental health first aid certificate.

“It really helps them understand their role as a responder or just someone who can start a conversation,” Stewart said.

This is the second year of the program and Stewart said that the first year was a great success.

“There were more applicant communities than we could service but we were proud to have taken the training to 12 rural areas across Canada last year,” Stewart said.

According to Stewart, people are open to having these conversations so it is all about providing the literacy surrounding it.

Individual applications along with community leaders applications are available online at domore.ag.
