The cattle market experienced a decline in prices last week.

Saskatchewan feeder steer prices were lower in most weight categories.

Canfax reported the average price for a 600 to 700 pound feeder steer was down $3.00 from the previous week.

The largest price decline was in the 900 plus category of $6.69 per hundredweight while the only price increase was in the 400 to 500 pound weight class.

Feeder heifer prices were also lower. The average price for a 600 to 700 pound heifer was down $2.20.

Canfax reported roughly 6,000 head of cattle were sold in Saskatchewan last week.

There was scattered hail damage during the first week of September.

The Canadian Crop Hail Association’s Rick Omelchenko said there were over 250 hail damage claims in parts of southern and central Saskatchewan. Northern regions were not affected.

He said there was light to medium damage with pea sized hail, which will likely fall into the less then payable to 30 per cent loss.

Omelchenko said ripe crops are particularily vulnerable.

Hail loss is covered until the end of October.

The combines are rolling again in the Outlook area.

Regional crop specialist Kaeley Kindrachuk estimated harvest at about 20 per cent complete.

He said she hasn’t heard any specific numbers yet but so far yields and quality are about average.

Kindrachuk said they didn’t get as much rain as some areas last week, maybe half an inch.
