Crop Hail Reports

Fewer crop hail damage claims in Saskatchewan

Aug 13, 2019 | 10:12 AM

The fourth week in July saw a big drop in crop hail damage claims across Saskatchewan.

Canadian Crop Hail Association President Rick Omelchenko said in the previous report there were 3,000 claims across the prairies with 1,200 in Saskatchewan. He said that changed significantly in the last update.

“We had a lot less then we had the previous week we’re around 300 plus claims,” Omelchenko said. “It was mostly in Landis, North Battleford, Battleford, Davidson, Simpson, Cupar, Southey, Mossbank, Assiniboia, Gull Lake, Canora, Cutknife, Spiritwood, Elrose. It was pretty wide spread again.”

Omelchenko said there were a number of storms but they were less intense.

“Smaller storms but some still some pretty severe activity in each one of those areas, but they were small areas and some were getting hit twice. They were a couple days apart so that’s kind of what’s been happening this last week here,” Omelchenko said. “But it has slowed down tremendously for the previous week.”

There were reports of hail stones that were golf ball size.

Omelchenko said it’s hard to predict what will happen in August but in the mean time it’s been quiet.

“I’m glad for the little bit of a break and get some companies to catch up a little bit,” Omelchenko said. “If they kept coming 3,000 claims at a crack, guys would be starting to fall behind. We have some deferrals that we’re cleaning up now as crops are actually starting to turn pretty quickly across the southern areas of Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta.”
