Three-hundred-and-ninety-five workers at Mosaic’s Colonsay mine are getting a temporary pink slip.

The company is shutting down the potash mine until markets improve.

A spokesperson said one of the wettest springs ever in the United States means farmers didn’t get crops in the ground making it a tough market for fertilizer.

About 50 workers will stay on to maintain the mine while the rest will be done as of Sept. 9.

There was a spike in calls this year to the Saskatchewan farm stress line.

Mobile Crisis Services Executive Director John McFadyen said there are several stressors for farmers on top of the drought this spring.

“Concerns on bankruptcy, also succession planning and the stress that comes with that,” McFadyen said. “Making decisions on the transition of the farm either the selling of the farm or moving the farm to another family member and how that’s done.”

There were 255 calls from April through June.
