Rainfall contributing to crop improvement

Crop conditions are improving greatly after the rainfall, according to this week’s provincial crop report.

The most amount of rain reported was in the Webb area. That area received 81 millimetres of rain.

Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Cory Jacob said because of the lack of rain early in the season, it’s possible to see a late harvest.

“It depends too when our first frost comes and how our harvest conditions look. I’m hoping we don’t see a late harvest for producers but that might have to be the case,” Jacob said.

The Melfort and Tisdale area is in good shape for moisture after recent rainfall in the region but more might be needed in a week or two according to Jacob.

“But just an inch or two at once, not these three or four inch rains because that can cause some issues,” Jacob said.

The most amount of rain recorded was in the Webb area, which received 81 millimeters.

Crop conditions have improved greatly with some crops that were previously in poor condition now stretching into the fair to good condition. Some crops around the province are even in the excellent category.

Crop damage is due to localized flooding, strong winds, hail and insects. There was some localized flooding in the Melfort and Tisdale region.

“I think that area is doing better in moisture situation and are in better shape than other parts of the province,” he said.

Haying operations have begun in some areas with reports of not much yield in the first cut of hay with lower quality than anticipated.
