Having the right employees on the farm has always been an ongoing challenge.

A new study said the agriculture labour shortage is significant.

Debra Hauer is with the Canadian Agriculture Human Resource Council and said Saskatchewan agriculture is unique.

“We estimated that Saskatchewan lost $575 million in lost sales because there were not the workers that were needed in Saskatchewan representing about four per cent of the total farm cash receipts for the province,” Hauer said.

The Labour Market Forecast said Canadian agriculture lost $2.9 billion because of unfilled vacancies according to Hauer.

A national survey suggests most Canadians are concerned with the rising cost of food prices.

Abacus Data was commissioned by industry group Food and Consumer Products of Canada to conduct the survey, which found nine in 10 Canadians are concerned.

Statistics Canada said the price of fresh vegetables in May swelled 16.7 per cent, while food prices jumped 3.5 per cent from the same period last year.

Abacus Data C-E-O David Colleto said he expects the issue will play a significant role in the upcoming federal election.
