Shellbrook couple named outstanding young farmers

Jason and Jenna Ranger are the 2019 Saskatchewan Outstanding Young Farmers.

Jason was raised on a farm near Leask while Jenna grew up on a mixed farm in Southern Alberta.

It was Jason’s desire to farm and that wish came true when a neighbour moved away and he was able to rent 2,400 acres in the spring of 2006.

Today the couple farm roughly 11,000 acres in the Shelbrook and Leask district growing canola, oats, wheat, lentils and peas.

Jason said their future plans are quite simple.

“We’ve expanded a lot over the last decade so we’re kind of at a size that we’re happy with so we’ve slowed down expansion from what we were doing before,” he said. “Now it’s about improving our business and trying to make it better any way that we can.”

Jenna Ranger has a dentistry practice in Prince Albert. She is also the Chief of Dentistry at Victoria Hospital.

Jenna said they both have demanding careers.

“I feel like that makes us both very driven people and I think that’s what attracted us to each other,” she said. “We love working as part of a team.”

The Rangers were one of three couples nominated for the award. The other two nominees were Cody Straza and Allison Squires from Wood Mountain and Scott and Heather Langelaar of Waldheim.

The Rangers will represent Saskatchewan at Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmer event in New Brunswick this December.
