A farm group says Saskatchewan producers need help from the provincial and federal governments to deal with dry conditions.

The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan is calling for a drought-related AgriRecovery assessment. For many producers 2019 is the third straight year of below average moisture.

The group also wants the entire province made eligible for the Federal Livestock Tax Deferral program.

APAS President Todd Lewis said Saskatchewan Crop Insurance should consider a new program to encourage the conversion of drought-damaged cereal crops into livestock feed such as green feed, silage or grazing.

Three new satellites will be radar mapping Canada’s landmass every two to three days.

Agriculture and Agri-food Canada launched the RADARSAT Constellation Mission, or RCM, yesterday.

Dr. Andrew Davidson said the data collected from these satellites will be used in a number of different agriculture sectors including crop monitoring, mapping crop types, surface soil moisture estimates and yield.

The head of animal protection in Saskatchewan is asking livestock producers to call his office before there is a crisis.

Executive Director Don Ferguson said if something doesn’t seem right on a neighbor’s property they should call as his office would rather deal with a minor problem or no issue at all before there is a tragedy.

Ferguson spoke at the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association conference this week in Moose Jaw.

This Tuesday will be the first ever field day for the new Livestock And Forage Centre of Excellence (LFCE) south of Clavet.

The event is being called Under One Roof after the the University of Saskatchewan moved its teaching and research units to the new location.

LFCE Director Dr. Kris Ringwall said there will be tours, cattle and forage research scientists will be on hand to answer questions and there will be presentation from market analyst Anne Wasko.

It’s a free event with a complimentary beef on a bun.
