Agriculture Minister begins consultation on next policy framework

Jan 22, 2026 | 11:33 AM

An in-person roundtable marked the start of consultations that will be part of the development of the Next Policy Framework (NPF).

The event was hosted by Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

The NPF will replace the 2023-2028 Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP) as the main federal, provincial and territorial program for Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector from 2028 to 2033.

During the roundtable, MacDonald spoke with agricultural representatives about current and emerging challenges and opportunities facing Canadian agriculture and agri-food.

“Meaningful engagement is essential in developing policy, and these consultations will help ensure the Next Policy Framework is grounded in the experiences and perspectives of those who know the sector best,” MacDonald said.

MacDonald will host roundtables across Canada to hear from regional associations, producers, and processors.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada will organize national online consultations through the NPF website. Comments to be submitted online up until Jun. 30.

Consultations will focus on gathering feedback and provide further opportunities to share their perspectives and help shape the future direction agriculture program.
