Canary seed growers will meet to discuss market potential and agronomy

Dec 3, 2025 | 3:47 PM

The Canary Seed Development Commission of Saskatchewan (CSDCS) will host its annual meeting and information session in Regina, Sask. on Dec. 11.

Following a short business meeting, there will be a presentation from Adam Carter at the Crop Development Centre. He will provide an update on canary seed breeding research.

A review of suitable fungicides for canary seed and plant growth regulators research trials will be discussed by Bill May with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Chuck Penner with LeftField Commodity Research will provide a market update.

Following the meeting and presentations, attendees will be treated to lunch featuring a variety of dishes made with canary seed.

CSDCS executive director Darren Yungmann said since the organization’s establishment in 2006 under the Agri-Food Act, the commission has worked under the leadership of a volunteer board of directors to advance canary seed profitability through research, the development of new varieties and market diversification efforts.

“We communicate through newsletters, our website and the annual meeting and appreciate hearing back from the growers we represent and government and industry stakeholders,” Yungmann said.

Farmers and industry representatives have the option of attending in person or participating online. Registration is available at cropweek.com but must be done by Dec. 5.
