Agribition elects executive, records profit

Apr 11, 2019 | 5:02 PM

Canadian Western Agribition (CWA) has elected its new leadership team.

Chris Lees of Arcola was elected president. Lees has been involved with CWA since the beginning in 1971, in several different capacities. The vice president is Kim Hextall from Grenfell.

Part of the executive includes past president Bruce Holmquist of Kinistino.

The six-day show recorded a profit of roughly $190,000. Holmquist said profits were down slightly but the show was successful.

“A little bit less, but still good. I mean we`re not for profit. We just contributed a million dollars of our savings, basically, in cash to the International Trade Centre and Evraz,” Holmquist said. “We’re as strong as we’ve ever been.”

“Just like agriculture, we’re going to have some years where profit may be a little bit less. We exceeded expectations when you look at the harvest we had last fall and how dry it was in some areas. I’m pleased with it,” Holmquist said.

There were good reports on the number of international sales.

“Those are sales that are reported back through our international buyers survey and reported back to the office,” Holmquist said. “It’s not necessarily cattle that go through the sale ring. We’re probably low on that because I’m sure not everybody reports actual value.”

It was announced Agribition will host a new professional circuit finals rodeo.

The Maple Leaf Finals will feature ten of the top contestants in each of the seven major rodeo events competing for over $100,000 thousand in prize money.
