U.S. tariffs on Canada delayed

Tariffs on pause for 30 days

Feb 4, 2025 | 10:09 AM

North Americans can breathe a sigh of relief after U-S President Donald Trump delayed tariffs on Canada.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe gave credit to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and federal Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc for securing the 30-day reprieve, and said this will allow leaders to continue efforts to prevent the U.S. from imposing the tariffs.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she’s “greatly heartened” both sides have agreed to crack down on fentanyl illegal activities at the border. She repeated calls for provincial and federal leaders to “de-escalate rhetoric” and to focus on diplomacy.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew said the decision to hold off on imposing broad tariffs shows Canadians are effective when they stand up for themselves.

The Manitoba government had said it would remove U.S. alcohol from liquor stores and cut off American companies from provincial contracts. But the move has now been paused after Trump’s announcement. Kinew says he hopes the tariffs never come but the province has to be ready to react if they do.

Mexico’s 30-day pause came earlier yesterday morning.
