Maple Leaf Foods unveils name of its pork business

Oct 11, 2024 | 1:45 PM

Maple Leaf Foods is looking to the past in naming its new, independent pork company.

The history behind Canada Packers goes back nearly a century. Three of the country’s larger meatpackers amalgamated to form Canada Packers in the early 1990’s and the company eventually became Maple Leaf Foods after combining with Maple Leaf Mills.

Maple Leaf Foods President and CEO Curtis Frank said the new company will build on its legacy as an industry leader and will move forward with a focus on sustainable solutions and global reach.

“While grounded in solid roots that have been an important part of Maple Leaf Foods’ history, Canada Packers also provides a platform for the forward-thinking vision,” Frank said. “We are excited for what the future holds for Canada Packers as we advance plans to complete the separation of the businesses in 2025.”

Maple Leaf Foods will continue with consumer-packaged goods, while Canada Packers will focus on the pork business.

Maple Leaf Foods will retain a 19.9 per cent ownership in Canada Packers, and the two companies will enter into an evergreen pork supply agreement that will provide Maple Leaf Foods with secure access to pork.

Canada Packers is expected to be spun off as an independent, publicly traded company in 2025.
