Silver lining in Alberta Sugar Beet Growers Farm Sustainability Assessment

Dec 12, 2020 | 9:35 AM

TABER, Alta.,– Alberta Sugar Beet Growers (ASBG) have used the Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA) over the past two years to assess growers’ on-farm performance for sustainability. The actions have lead to ASBG receiving Silver level FSA Verification.

The process begins with a portion of growers answering a 112 query questionnaire on 17 various topics, which include soil management, crop protection, chemicals and fertilizer, labour conditions, health and safety, and others. The analyzed date from the current on-farm practices determines if the growers are complying with recommended practices that promote sustainability.

At the end of October, several farmers were randomly chosen for an independent audit, to confirm that on-farm best management practices were being followed. According to the FSA, the audit produced a Silver level verification for Alberta Sugar Beet Growers.

ASBG set the FSA Silver level as their baseline for sustainable sourcing, with 100% Canadian sugar products meeting the requirements for the performance level. Growers haven`t received the verification based on their sugar beets alone, as many other factors are intertwined in the farming process.

ASBG Executive Director, Melody Garner-Skiba, indicates the Silver level verification means the growers are using proper practices in the 17 different topic categories in their overall farming operations.

“Farm sustainability in all aspects is paramount for the future of the agriculture industry. Through this project, we have been able to verify the outstanding work farmers do by managing their resources appropriately to benefit the environment, people, and the economy and achieve a sustainable farming operation.”

Sugar made from sugar beets makes up about 8 -10 per cent of the sugar market.

If you want to support local farmers and purchase 100% Canadian sugar, look for Roger’s sugar packages that have a stamp that starts with the number 22.
