Saskatchewan livestock producers could benefit from Ottawa’s expanded Emergency Business Account program.

Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association (SCA) chair Arnold Balicki said the interest free loan will enable producers to delay selling their livestock until prices show improvement.

He said prices usually drop during the busy fall calf marketing period.

Also, SCA holds a virtual fall meeting today at 1 p.m. to discuss several issues, including farm business risk programs, irrigation, livestock research and the Western Livestock Price Insurance Program.

Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit was re-elected in Monday’s provincial election.

Marit, the Saskatchewan Party MLA for the Wood River Constituency served in Premier Scott Moe’s cabinet prior to the election call.

It is not known if Marit will continue in his role as agriculture minister until Moe unveils his new cabinet.

Maple Leaf Foods reported a third-quarter profit of $66 million, up from $13.4 million in the same quarter last year.

The company’s sales climbed higher on a strong performance by its meat protein group that more than offset costs to mitigate COVID-19 risks.

The meat protein group reported sales growth of 6.4 per cent, while the plant protein group saw sales growth of 9.3 per cent.
