Harvest at 98 per cent complete in Saskatchewan, weak yields but strong quality

Harvest is wrapping up across Saskatchewan.

According to the province’s last weekly report of the season, around 98 per cent of crops have been combined.

More than half of the province’s 22 farming districts are all done. This includes Saskatoon, Kindersley, Humboldt, and Prince Albert.

The farms around Yorkton are the farthest behind; they’re around 91 percent complete.

All crops are at least 90 per cent harvested with flax and soybeans needing the most work. Winter wheat, spring wheat, fall rye, durum, lentils, and peas are all 100 per cent complete.

According to the report, the yields for each crop were below average.

• Spring Wheat: 43 bushels per acre
• Durum: 24 bushels per acre
• Oats: 82 bushels per acre
• Barley: 56 bushels per acre
• Fall Rye: 36 bushels per acre
• Flax: 18 bushels per acre
• Canola: 33 bushels per acre
• Soybeans: 17 bushels per acre
• Field Peas: 31 bushels per acre
• Mustard: 636 lbs per acre
• Lentils: 1,101 lbs per acre
• Canary Seed: 982 lbs per acre
• Chickpeas: 858 lbs per acre

Despite the lower-than-average yields, the quality of the crops was strong. Each is estimated to be above the 10-year average.

Fall rains and heavy, wet snow are needed moving forward as soil moisture continued to decline. Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts snow next week for multiple communities, most of which will be south of Saskatoon.
